How To Handle Child Seperation Anxiety Disorder

All Children, and most parents experience separation anxiety at one time or another. First of all,  you need to know and accept that this is a very common occurrence. You can also expect this to come and go at differents stages throughout life. Below are a few helpful tips in dealing with this normal but uncomfortable situation:

  • Remind your child that learning to cope with this is a positive thing, even if it doesn’t feel very good at the time.
  • Set up specific goodbye routines, maybe special hugs, waves goodbye, and so on.
  • Don’t linger. As hard as it is to leave your unhappy child, perform your goodbye routine, and remind them that you will be back to pick them up at the end of the day.
  • Never sneak out. It is much better to deal with these feelings in a direct way. Settle your child into the daycare environment, perform your goodbye routine, reassure them, and leave.
  • Feel free to call your provider a short time later just to make sure your child has settled in. Don’t ask to talk to your child, as this might create a routine you do not want to get into.

Remember good parenting is hard work and not always fun or comfortable, but if you follow these guidlines and stick to it, you and your child will be happier in the long run.
